Dialysis Products Causing Heart Attacks

Patients with acute or chronic kidney failure are often treated with hemodialysis, commonly referred to as dialysis. Dialysis does the job that the kidneys can no longer perform. Defective dialysis products GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® acid concentrates, made by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), can cause heart attack and other serious or fatal heart problems. If you believe that your heart attack or heart problems may have been caused by GranuFlo® or NaturaLyte®, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. GranuFlo® & NaturaLyte® Recall

On March 29, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a Class I recall of Fresenius Medical Care’s to GranuFlo® or NaturaLyte® acid concentrate products. A Class I recall is the most serious type of recall. It is used when the product is likely to cause serious health problems or death.

Even though the recall is due to a potentially fatal problem, the products are still in use. The recall was for relabeling of the product and clinics were not asked to stop using the products that they already had when the recall was issued.

Improper Dosing

The problem with GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® is the potential for improper dosing which can lead to elevated levels of bicarbonate in the blood. Too much bicarbonate can cause metabolic alkalosis, which can ultimately result in cardiopulmonary arrest and death.
